Pot Stickers

Cooked pot-stickers

I made a bunch of gyozas today with the classic recipe: ground pork, cabbage, scallions, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and egg whites. The only problem was that I forgot just how boring and tiring the process of filling, crimping, and freezing 60 gyozas is.

Frozen pot-stickers

But now that I am done, I am happy. Frozen gyozas make a quick meal. And they last a long time in the freezer.

Cinco de Flyo

This weekend was a World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend. To celebrate, Disc Nation held a free tournament called Cinco De Fly-o. It was held at the Twin Parks Country Club in Dripping Springs, Texas which is south west of Austin on 290.

The place was packed with 150+ people. For being a free tournament, they had a lot of perks. There was free breakfast tacos in the morning and a free lunch and dessert. The park was free for the day. And everyone got a coupon for merchandise at Disc Nation for playing. I think that Disc Nation did a really good job with this event. There were a lot of people running the tournament. The only problem was that it took a while to get going. We started at 11 instead of 10 in the morning.

I was not lucky enough to play with John for the event. But the people I played with were okay. There was one nice and talkative person. The other people were rather quiet and reserved.

I finished 18 holes with a score of 77. I had one bad hole where I scored 8. But the rest of them were decent surprisingly enough. And when I saw John again, I learned that he had pipped me with a score of 76.

Closest to the pin marker

One of the holes had a closest to the pin contest. I was no where close…

Mark on mountain bike
John on mountain bike

John had originally wanted to go mountain biking afterwards on one of the trails at the park. But had decided against it since our skills were rather lacking. Sadly, although I own a mountain bike, I have never ridden it off road. Apparently, John’s bike’s tires were rotting. So he had to borrow his wife’s bike. And it seems that he did not have a bike helmet as well. He had to borrow his eight year old son’s helmet.

We did stop by Walnut Creek Park after a huge lunch/dinner at Pappasitos (We ordered the mixed chicken and beef fajitas for two. Which came out as all chicken. So they gave us another order that had all steak. Four times the food, half the price!). The trail was quite easy, fun, and shaded. And muddy too with all of the recent rain. It is a shame that I have never been to this park having lived so close to it for so long.

I had one interesting experience during the ride. In this one section of the course, it was quite twisty and narrow. You were doing a tight turn after tight turn. So I was surprised when I turned the corned and saw a snake laying on the path! Fortunately, I was able to just miss running it over.

Hole 3

I went to Old Settler’s park for some disc golf today. I started off with a good approach shot on hole 3. No birdie though.

With all of the recent rains and the threatening rain clouds around, it was quite humid out there. Probably around 100% humidity. And hot as well too.

Poison Ivy

Ugh. It seems that the Poison Ivy is growing! It is a shame that I am allergic to it.

Hole 15 1st
Hole 15 2nd

My first throw on hole 15 was shortened when it glanced off of a tree. But the second throw landed right next to the basket. Sweet!

Hole 16

And the throw on the next hole was pretty nice as well. I was a little worried when a dog came running down towards my disc when it hit the earth. But I heard the owner yell at it to stop and it turned around and ran back.

Blended cake

Adam tried out another recipe. Unfortunately, there was a cake malfunction. Two of them, from what I hear. So, to recover from the disaster, he decided to blend the results. And this is what turned out. He had an amusing quote when he explained that with so much cold butter in it, it had firmed up quite well.

Game #1

Pillars of the Earth

Finally I get to try this game out. Mike had bought the German version in December. But we never got around to playing it. Apparently, this game is based off of the story by Ken Follet. However, you do not have to read the book in order to play this game. This game was certainly interesting to play. It is a return-on-investments game where you slowly build up your victory point generation. There are only six rounds in this game. So, it should be a quick game. The only problems are 1) trying to figure out what workers to go after and 2) dealing with the randomness of the resource generation. With three amounts of three resources giving you nine cards, only seven of the cards are dealt out in a round. So it is possible to get only one amount of a resource in a round. And that resource could be the one that you are banking on.

Game #2

Taluva

Another playing of this lightly meaty game for me. The game feels like it should play quicker than it does. We had Jon with us and it was his first time playing. And because of that, Ed left him alone and only picked on me. Which wasn’t that fair. Jon tried an interesting strategy by only placing huts for most of the game. Which made for a rather large settlement. But he would need to eventually split it up so that he could place more than one tower or temple.

Game #3

Battlelore

Once again, everyone bugged out early. So I played a two-player game of Battlelore with Adam. Adam had Iron Dwarves on top of hills. Which are hard to dislodge with my weaker Gnomes. I had some pretty bad luck with the Battlelore card (there is only one of these in the deck). Adam played it against me and was able to activate a lot of units. On my next turn, I played the card which performs the same action. I was only able to activate one unit with a horrible roll. And then Adam plays the same card that I did and activate a lot of units again. After that, we shuffle the deck. And what does Adam draw, but the only Battlelore card! Ugh! Flawed!!

Lunch Time Tichuers 05/03/2007

I had the Dragon a lot today in the cards that were dealt to me. Sadly, I was never able to use it. In my one Tichu call, a ten bomb stopped me. And I do not feel bad making that call. You can never predict that a bomb is out there.
